Abdulrazaq A. Oniyangi Esq.
Abdulrazaq studied at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and the Nigerian Law School Lagos and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1982. He has a diverse experience both in the private sector and the public sector with over thirty years transactional commercial practice. Throughout the nineteen nineties he was the Managing Partner of Akanbi Oniyangi & Co and more recently prior to founding this firm, he was a Senior Partner at Wali-Uwais & Co., two highly regarded Nigerian commercial law firms.

Abdulrazaq joined the public sector in 2000 when he was appointed a Deputy Director Legal Services to the privatization agency, the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), the secretariat of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) at the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was subsequently appointed the General Counsel. At the BPE he drafted, reviewed and negotiated complex contracts involving the largest transactions in the country at the time, working with and across the table from some of the best local and international transaction professionals. He was also actively involved with the legal and regulatory reforms of the nation’s key economic sectors initiated by the BPE/NCP which led to new market oriented policies and laws, including the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 and the Electric Power Sector Reform Act 2004. He was a member of the Legal and Regulatory Committee on Telecoms, member of the Power Sector Reform Team and member/secretary of the Competition and Anti Trust Steering Committee.
In 2004 Abdulrazaq was granted a leave of absence by the BPE to join Abuja Investments Company Ltd (AICL), wholly owned by the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the parent company of all FCTA owned commercial enterprises. His appointment as the Company Secretary/Legal Adviser was made to enhance the company’s capacity to deal with complex transactions and to provide legal support for the restructuring of the company and its subsidiaries. Two years later he was appointed as an Executive Director and the Group Chief Operating Officer of the company. He was appointed the Managing Director/CEO of Abuja Urban Mass Transport Co. Ltd., a major subsidiary of AICL, from 2011 to 2022, after which he returned to private legal practice.
Mr. Oniyangi’s diverse experience has placed him in a unique position to provide premium service in assisting his clients to navigate the multiple legal and regulatory requirements of doing business in Nigeria. In the course of his career, he has attended various capacity building training programmes offered by global leading training providers and institutions and has acquired specialized skills in the areas of corporate/commercial law, financial law, privatization and public, private partnership(ppp), labour law and employment procedures. He works with associates who are highly skilled in similar areas of expertise.
